Things went horribly wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you encounter situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer level of destruction and just gives up, opting for amusement as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck with devastating force, consuming entire towns in its wake. Buildings collapsed like sandcastles, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath rubble, their fate precarious. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to face a future forever scarred.
Rescue teams sprang into action, fighting against time and dangerous conditions to find those still alive. The world watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster revealed itself, offering condolences to the affected population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with the case of bedhead hair. I couldn't figure it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and gracefully all over myself. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for work.
I flustered. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was a hopeless situation.
The rest of the day was just as bad. went wrong. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a Very bad pillow.
